I always kept mine punched up during those 'dicey' times. But I was never sure the adjacent sector, which was sometimes being worked from the other side of the radar room, was watching my traffic - in case any of my airplanes took an unexpected 'turn' for the worse!

Although I saw a lot of ridiculous Management mandates in my time; I don't recall any that specified which other sectors I had to watch. It was generally left to the controller's discretion (unless you were a trainee).

Thanks again AC2usn, for your insights!

Cheers,
-FactorNo Longer a Factorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15953669395261857717noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1488244694314662923.post-82181612044086932462012-10-23T21:56:54.140-04:002012-10-23T21:56:54.140-04:00We 'quick looked' adjacent sectors to insu...We 'quick looked' adjacent sectors to insure that 'fly aways' did not intrude unobserved. By having a 'feel' for the upcoming conflicts caused by too many airplanes and not enough airspace, the added planning time created by 'quick looking' many 'deals' were kept at arms length. You know what I'm talking about in this post. A radar sector can be like a vise when you have a wall of ugly weather gradually squeezing your traffic up against another controller's airspace. A loss of separation happens fast unless all adjacent sectors maintain good situational awareness of what's going on next door. You're right ~ those shifts definitely took their toll but as you know; any shift that ended without anyone having to pull the tapes and write statements was a good one.

Cheers!
-FactorNo Longer a Factorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15953669395261857717noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1488244694314662923.post-50090209908252550472012-10-23T10:02:59.953-04:002012-10-23T10:02:59.953-04:00just remmber Mr. Factor......

(Like you) I had a plan for my aircraft in my airspace when the opposing controller showed up on a conflicting course with no place else to go. Through a combination of turning / climbing / descending on the fly (no pun intended)by the two (and sometimes three) of us separation and weather avoidance was maintained. These events took their toll then and continue to glare brightly from the distant past. Really enjoy your writing talent. Thanks for taking the time to reflect.

AC2usnAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1488244694314662923.post-41591721780219041822012-10-10T16:54:00.900-04:002012-10-10T16:54:00.900-04:00Miss TWA - I do sense something of a discriminator...Miss TWA - I do sense something of a discriminatory policy toward robots. Perhaps they need a good lawyer to press the issue. After all; robots are hard working and absolutely essential members of today's society. These days, who'd want to do what they do? I love robots!

Cheers,
Factor No Longer a Factorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15953669395261857717noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1488244694314662923.post-60846443154206660632012-10-04T12:20:12.550-04:002012-10-04T12:20:12.550-04:00Factor.......!!!!!
